the program

Musicality. Movement. Connection

Last December, Julio and Silvina's workshops sold out. This year they're back with a true intensive: six 90-minute workshops over four days, designed as a deep learning experience and heavy on technique, on purpose. Friday's solo workshop, with leaders and followers in separate spaces, builds the foundation: the pivot, the free leg around a clear axis, and a body that responds to the music. Everything after that builds on it with new tools for musical interpretation. Calesita & Enrosque I and II on Saturday, and Soltada I and II on Sunday, give you more ways to be creative in your dance. Thursday opens the weekend with sacada and boleo combinations for improvisation, followed by a práctica so you can try them right away.

Thurs

Dec 3rd · Vienna Tango School

7:30–9:00 PM · Sacada & Boleo Combinations for Improvisation.

Sacada and boleo combinations to improve your improvisation: more options to draw on in the moment, to the music, on a social floor.

9:00–10:30 PM · Práctica (included).

Stay and put the combinations to work while they're fresh.

Fri

Dec 4th · Dance Studio Lioudmila/Vienna Tango School

Topic · Technique & Musical Coordination (split by role)

A solo workshop, split by role: each class focuses entirely on that role's technique, with leaders and followers in different spaces.

Mastering the pivot and the motion of the free leg around the supporting axis. Exercises for fine-tuning your dance to the music by enhancing your body's ability to react to different rhythms.

7:30–9:00 PM · Followers' Technique & Musical Coordination, with Silvina

Vienna Tango School, 303 Mill Street NE, Suite C, Vienna, VA 22180

8:00–9:30 PM · Leaders' Technique & Musical Coordination, with Julio

El Bulín at Dance Studio Lioudmila, 18 Roth Street, 2nd Floor, Alexandria, VA 22314

Sat

Dec 5th · Vienna Tango School

Saturday, December 5 · Calesita & Enrosque I and II · Vienna Tango School

Both workshops are for leaders and followers. Each builds on Friday's technique.

2:00–3:30 PM · Calesita & Enrosque I

4:00–5:30 PM · Calesita & Enrosque II

The Calesita: Shaping movements starting from the free leg while maintaining good support on the standing leg: musicality and interpretation.

The Enrosque: Technique and possibilities of pivoting while maintaining a crossed position, and how to use them to enrich your dance, for both the leader and the follower.

Part II builds on Part I.

8:00 PM–12:00 AM · Abrazo Milonga with a special performance by Julio & Silvina.

Our first-Saturday milonga, Glitter Edition: dress your best. Milonga entry is purchased separately and isn't included in workshop passes.

Sun

Dec 6th · Vienna Tango School

Sunday, December 6 · Soltada I and II · Vienna Tango School

For leaders and followers, building on Friday's technique.

12:30–2:00 PM · Soltada I

2:30–4:00 PM · Soltada II

How to maintain connection without the traditional embrace: the dynamics of turns in soltadas.

Choosing your role

Choose one role for the whole Intensive. To keep leaders and followers balanced, each registration is for one role, Lead or Follow, across every workshop.

Coming with a partner and planning to switch roles? Register one of you as a leader and one as a follower. One of you takes Silvina's followers' technique class on Friday, and the other takes Julio's leaders' technique class.

No partner needed for Friday. The technique workshops are individual, solo work, so you don't need a partner to take them.

Foundations is where your dancing takes shape — two complementary eight-week series, taken in either order. Inside every figure we build the technique that makes it work: axis, pivot, connection, and musicality.

Full Pass · $225

All six 90-minute workshops, Thursday through Sunday, plus Thursday's práctica. Choose Lead or Follow.
